Hugh Roddis is a professional engineer and entrepreneur with a career full of impressive achievements.
He completed his B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from King’s College, University of London, in 1965, earning the title of Associate of Kings College (AKC) in the same year. In 1974, Hugh earned his Professional Engineer (P.Eng) designation in Nova Scotia, specializing in Electrical and Electronics engineering. This marked the beginning of a prolific career that saw him take on numerous pivotal roles across various organizations.
In 1975, Hugh founded his own company Orion Electronics Limited in the Municipality of Clare, Nova Scotia. Under his leadership as President and Chief Engineer, the company became a leader in manufacturing and selling advanced radio location equipment. Orion’s products, including oil spill tracking and ocean current tracking equipment, were used worldwide. The company also developed control equipment for water pumping stations and computerized lumber tallying systems for sawmills.
In 1991, Hugh relocated Orion’s operations to Windsor, Hants County, NS, where he expanded the company’s focus to include law enforcement and national security products. Orion’s innovative solutions gained widespread adoption, with over 400 agencies worldwide using its equipment.
During his career, Hugh served on many advisory boards at the Provincial and Federal levels and has received numerous awards and recognitions, including being a Life Member of the Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia and a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International. Beyond his professional work, he has made significant contributions to his community, including funding a new public library in Windsor.
Over the past decade, and as a matter of fact, throughout his life, Hugh has been questioning traditional ways of thinking and analyzing the outcomes humanity has achieved. His true talent for thinking and observation has culminated in his book “Rethinking Thinking,” which offers a fresh perspective on how we approach and understand human thinking. Hugh shares his insights, providing much food for thought about both the past and the future. This book will soon be available to the public.
